Robert Creeley

Mais um exercício tradutório. Dessa vez a vítima foi Robert Creeley.

Autorretrato

Ele quer ser
um velho brutal,
um velho agressivo,
tão insuportável, tão selvagem
quanto o vazio que o rodeia,

Ele não aceita compromissos,
nem quer ser agradável
com ninguém. Somente ruim,
inflexível em sua brutal
e completa rejeição a tudo.

Tentou o suave,
o amável, o “oh,
vamos nos dar as mãos”
e foi terrível,
enfadonho, brutalmente inconsequente.

Agora ele se apoiará
sobre suas próprias pernas decadentes.
Seus braços, sua pele
encolhem-se dia a dia.
E ele ama e odeia por igual.

Self-Portrait

He wants to be
a brutal old man,
an aggressive old man,
as dull, as brutal
as the emptiness around him,

He doesn’t want compromise,
nor to be ever nice
to anyone. Just mean,
and final in his brutal,
his total, rejection of it all.

He tried the sweet,
the gentle, the “oh,
let’s hold hands together”
and it was awful,
dull, brutally inconsequential.

Now he’ll stand on
his own dwindling legs.
His arms, his skin,
shrink daily. And
he loves, but hates equally.
